As a teacher of kindergarteners, I often would dress-up as different characters to help them learn the letters of the alphabet such as Mixed-up Marvin, Randy the Reindeer (Rudolph’s cousin who didn’t make the cut), Nina the Nutty Nurse or Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater and his wife Penelope. I love to make kids and people laugh with goofy antics. In high school, I was very quiet and shy but if I had on a costume, a whole other side of me came out. I loved playing an old woman with a shawl, old lady shoes, glasses and a cane. I even was so bold in costume, I tapped a pretty popular guy on the behind as I walked by and just kept walkin’! I don’t think he knew what hit him!
So, when I became a step-mom to Patrick, I couldn’t wait to have some fun with him! Let the games begin!! For Halloween I thought it would be fun to send him on a scavenger hunt around the house for glow sticks. I dressed up as a witch with a very ugly mask on. When I opened the door to Patrick, in my witchiest voice invited him in. He said, “Dad, it’s Debbie??” but Dan was down in the garage getting ready to spook Patrick there. Was this really his stepmom? What had he gotten himself into? He told me later, he could see in the door that there were decorations and he had no clue what was going on, but decided to just go with it!
To make the hunt for glow sticks a bit more challenging, Patrick had to climb through spider web that I stretched across our living room, to get to the prize on the other side. He found one of the sticks in a pot of spaghetti brains, and another in his room where his dad was hiding in costume on the top bunk. I don’t think seeing the drill Dan held to his head scarred Patrick too much! (he claims he survived the ordeal!)

That spider web was great stuff! I put it all over the house!! Teeheeheehee!! (you have to say it with a creepy voice!)

I think he had more fun with the spider web stuff afterwards!

Dan and I waking Patrick up another Halloween morning! It’s ok, he’s worked through all these memories!!

I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!!
I never had kids of my own and I often hear about the struggles blended families go through. I feel so blessed that God gave me a wonderful stepson with a good sense of humor! And I didn’t have to do diapers!!!
